Divorce and Family Law matters
Three questions come up in most divorce cases:
- Are there children?
- How much money is involved?
- What is this going to cost?
Where there are children, custody can become the issue, in divorce court and in paternity cases. Custody cases are expensive, in money and in the strain they put on a person. The firm will prepare you for that.
The firm will help you pursue child support, maintenance (alimony), or property of the marriage. Marital property includes most retirement rights. A QDRO (Qualified Domestic Relations Order), or a similar order, can be prepared. If a spouse has wasted marital assets, the firm can pursue a dissipation award.
Attorney fees, expert fees, doctor fees in a custody case, investigator fees, and other costs can become large. The firm will tell you up front what the costs are, and how some of them can be avoided.
Other issues that often need attention:
- Refinancing the house
- Removing a former spouse from the mortgage
- Resuming a maiden name
- Supervised visitation
- Grandparent visitation
- Moving out of state
Family law work at the firm also includes guardianships, adoptions, name changes, and post decree matters.
